Give every date a status

Use three headings: confirmed, preferred and awaiting an answer. Place each date under one heading and record the source of any confirmation.

Keep the plan small. Its job is to show what you can currently say about availability. It does not determine a lease start, a legal notice period or an obligation under your current agreement.

Map what has to happen first

Start with the events that could change the date you tell the recipient. Work backwards from your proposed move and assign one next action to each unresolved event. Write who will obtain the answer rather than assuming somebody else is handling it.

If an event is only a preference, say so. This keeps a convenient transport date from silently becoming a promise that you can take possession that day.

Confirm the relevant access or key arrangements.
Check the availability of people helping with the move.
Resolve transport or temporary storage questions.
Record any existing commitment that needs separate checking.

Try one clearly hypothetical cost

Here is an original arithmetic example using invented figures: 14 days at A$70 per day equals A$980. This illustrates one possible overlap cost only. It excludes other costs and is neither a market rent quote nor a legal billing formula.

In your private plan, replace the invented inputs with relevant figures you have actually checked. Keep uncertain amounts marked as estimates. Record what the calculation includes so you can revise it without mistaking a partial cost for a complete moving budget.

Write an availability statement you can maintain

State guidance: Victoria. Each rule applies only to the state named.

An adaptable message is: “My earliest feasible move is [date]. My preferred date is [date]. I am awaiting confirmation of [specific dependency] and will update you by [realistic date].” Delete any sentence that does not fit your situation.

Compare the statement with the date entered in the application. If a field permits only one date and you are unsure how to represent a dependency, ask how to record it. The following Victoria reference was checked on 7 September 2026.

Do not silently promote a preferred date to a confirmed one. Keep the unanswered question and the next action beside it. If the answer affects an existing agreement or notice obligation, seek the relevant tenancy guidance for that issue separately.

Replace the question with the confirmed answer and its date. Recheck the earliest feasible move, any private cost estimate and the availability statement you intend to send. If the answer changes another household member’s plan, ask them to confirm the revised timing.

No. The figures are invented solely to show the multiplication. Use checked inputs for your own planning, identify excluded costs and avoid treating that example as evidence about rents in any location.

Does this plan calculate my legal notice period?
