applicant playbook for Australian renters
Applicant playbookMake changing casual shifts understandable by period
Casual shifts can change from week to week. That variability does not need to be hidden. Present a readable run of dated periods, identify any exceptional interruption and keep future scheduling separate from earnings already recorded.

Short answer
Order recent payslips by pay period, compare periods of the same length and add a short note only when one period has a clear exceptional reason. Do not treat a roster or expected shifts as pay already received.
Useful context
Choose comparable periods
Keep weekly records with weekly records and fortnightly records with fortnightly records. Label pay-period start and end dates rather than relying on issue dates alone. This lets a reader see variation without confusing a longer period for a larger ordinary week.
Working checklist
Identify the exceptional period
Look for a period affected by leave, illness, a late start or another documented interruption. Explain the operational reason in one neutral sentence when it materially changes the sequence. Do not add personal detail that does not help interpret the record.
Action plan
Keep rosters separate from paid records
A roster may show scheduled work, while a payslip records a completed pay period. Label them accordingly and avoid using scheduled hours to fill a gap in received income. If the request asks only for paid records, leave speculative schedules outside the file. Keep cancelled or swapped shifts out of any forward-looking summary.

Turn this guide into a clear application pack
Create a private, structured rental application file when you are ready.
- Prepare a structured rental application PDF with RentFiles.
- Fill your application before you choose whether to pay for a PDF export.
- RentFiles helps organise the file; the agent or landlord decides the application outcome.
Practical example
Example: one quiet fortnight
Asha supplies six fortnightly payslips. Five show her usual mix of shifts and one is lower because of approved unpaid leave. She labels the leave period once, preserves the actual figures and does not recalculate the sequence as though every fortnight were identical.
Keep in view
Share the minimum useful work record
Provide information relevant to the recipient's application process and handle identity or financial material carefully.
Select the periods needed for the request and check that unrelated payroll identifiers are not duplicated in summaries. Keep manager messages, full rosters and workplace discussions outside the handoff unless they answer an explicit question. Check every preview.
Questions
Common questions
Clear answers for the decisions people usually pause on.
Should I average my casual income in the application?
Use the fields and calculation method actually requested. Keep the underlying periods visible and do not invent a stable amount when your records show variation.
What if my latest payslip is unusually low?
Include the truthful period and add a concise dated explanation if there is a clear reason. Hiding the period can make the sequence harder to understand.
