Rental application preparation

Applicant playbook

Applying for a rental when returning from parental leave

Keep your current employment position and confirmed return plan distinct. A short factual note can explain the dates without sharing your family story.

Short answer

State that you remain employed if that is correct, describe your current leave or pay position and give the confirmed return date and hours. Label a proposed return as unconfirmed. Use available employer records to support the change, and ask the recipient what evidence they need.

Turn this guide into a clear application pack

Explain your current position and review the details before choosing a presentation.

Continue with the Tenant resume guide.

  • Create a personal rental profile, delivered as a shareable PDF, to complement the process required by the agent or landlord.
  • Fill your application before you choose whether to pay for a PDF export.
  • RentFiles helps organise the file; the agent or landlord decides the application outcome.

Practical example

Filled example: current leave, later return

Fictional example only. Priya remains with Example Design. Her latest payslip covers paid leave from 28 September to 11 October 2026. An employer note dated 7 October confirms a return on 26 October and an agreed four-day week. She lists these as two different periods rather than describing the future working pattern as pay already received.

A discussion about adding a fifth day is still open, so Priya leaves that proposed change out of the confirmed income summary. She can update the recipient if it is later agreed. The dates, role and arrangement are invented; they do not describe a statutory leave right or an eligibility standard.

Working checklist

Gather only the confirmation that matters

A useful record may explain the point that changed: a return date, agreed hours or current employment status. Ask the recipient which evidence they need before sending extra material. This preparation guide does not determine leave entitlements, benefit eligibility or how a landlord assesses your income.

  • Current employer and role.
  • Leave or pay position as it stands today.
  • Confirmed return date, or a clear unconfirmed label.
  • Agreed hours or employment pattern, if confirmed and relevant.
  • Available current record and the precise outstanding question.

Action plan

Write a neutral application note

Fictional message: "I remain employed by Example Design and am currently on parental leave. My employer has confirmed a return on 26 October 2026 at the agreed part-time hours. The current payslip relates to my leave period; the return confirmation describes the later arrangement. Please advise which records you need to assess the application."

Fictional employer request: "Could you confirm my current employment status, agreed return date and hours in a short dated note? Please include only the employment details relevant to the rental application." Do not ask the employer to confirm a salary or arrangement they have not agreed.

Useful context

Describe the employment position you have now

Returning to an existing job is different from starting with a new employer. Make that continuity clear if it applies to you. You can explain that you are currently on leave without supplying a detailed account of your family circumstances.

Separate what is confirmed from what is planned: current employment status, current pay arrangements, the return date and any agreed hours. If you are still discussing a return with your employer, the application should not describe the proposal as an agreed arrangement.

Keep in view

Keep private family details out of the work explanation

Provide information relevant to the recipient's application process and handle identity or financial material carefully.

Focus on the employment fact the recipient needs to understand. Do not include a child's records or medical information simply to make the work timeline longer. If a request seems unrelated, ask what information is needed and why. The rental decision remains with the recipient.

Questions

Common questions

Clear answers for the decisions people usually pause on.

Do I need to explain my whole parental leave arrangement in a rental application?

A short statement of your current employment position and confirmed return plan may explain the relevant issue. Follow the recipient's request and avoid adding private family details without a clear purpose.

What if my return-to-work date is not yet agreed?

Label it as proposed or unconfirmed and describe your current position accurately. Ask which current records the recipient can use rather than presenting a possible date as a confirmed return.
