problem solver for Australian renters

Situation playbook

Keep study history and new employment in the right periods

Finishing study and starting work can produce a short record with several changes close together. Keep the study period, job confirmation and paid work separate. This lets each document answer the question it was created for without implying that the new role has a longer history than it does.

Short answer

State the study completion or change date, the confirmed employment start and the latest income period separately. Use study records as historical context, work records for the current role and support arrangements only where they remain current and relevant.

Useful context

Close the study period accurately

Record when full-time or part-time study ended or changed, and use the relevant enrolment or completion record only for that period. If study continues alongside work, show both as current but different activities. Do not describe an expected completion as completed, and do not leave an old student status in a current summary after circumstances have changed.

Action plan

Review any support arrangement at the transition point

A family or other support arrangement used during study may continue, change or end when work starts. Include it only if it remains relevant to the application and is documented appropriately. Keep the support provider's information proportionate and separate from the renter's employment evidence so ownership remains clear.

Working checklist

Open the employment period with confirmed facts

Identify the employer, role and start date from the available employment record. Separate agreed terms from income already paid. Before the first payslip, the signed record can describe the role but cannot establish a history of payments. After pay begins, label each payslip by its actual covered period.

Keep in view

Avoid turning the transition into a forecast

Provide information relevant to the recipient's application process and handle identity or financial material carefully.

The application can explain what has changed without promising future income, employment duration or an outcome. Use current records and dates, keep older study material only where it completes the timeline and leave unrelated academic results, personal correspondence and financial detail outside the handoff.

Practical example

Example: graduation followed by a mid-month start

Noah completes study on 30 June, begins work on 15 July and receives a first partial-period payslip on 25 July. His summary closes the study stage in June, uses the signed employment record for the start date and labels the July payslip as a partial first period. It does not multiply that amount into a projected monthly figure.

Questions

Common questions

Clear answers for the decisions people usually pause on.

Should I remove study documents after starting work?

Keep only the study record needed to explain the recent timeline or an ongoing enrolment. Current employment should be supported by its own records.

Can I treat the salary in an offer as income already received?

No. The offer can confirm agreed employment terms, while payslips or other current records show income actually paid for their stated periods.
