problem solver for Australian renters
Situation playbookConnect your previous role and new job without blurring the dates
Changing jobs can leave an application with documents from two employers and very little history in the new role. Those records do not need to look continuous. They need to show where the previous role ended, what the new role confirms and which parts of the new arrangement have actually begun.

Short answer
Create a short employment transition note with the old role end date, the new role start date and the date of the latest current record. Label an offer or contract as confirmation of agreed terms, and label payslips only for income already paid.
Useful context
Build the employment bridge around three dates
Record the final day in the previous role, the confirmed start of the new role and the date of the most recent new-role evidence. Keep each date attached to its event. If there was a gap, leave it visible and state its length rather than extending either job to cover it. A simple chronology is more credible and useful than a single line that makes two separate roles appear continuous.
Action plan
Handle the first-payslip gap honestly
If the new role has started but the first payslip is not available, state that timing directly and include only records that already exist. A concise note can say when the first pay cycle is expected without predicting an amount. If a payslip arrives before the handoff, add it as a dated update instead of silently replacing the earlier version.
Working checklist
Give each document one clear purpose
Use the final old-role payslip or separation record only to close the earlier period. Use the signed offer or employment agreement to describe the new role and start date. Use a new payslip to show income already received. Do not present a future salary as paid income, and do not use historical earnings as though they describe the new position.
Keep in view
Limit the explanation to the employment transition
Provide information relevant to the recipient's application process and handle identity or financial material carefully.
The application needs the dates, roles and selected records that explain the change. It does not need private messages with either employer, reasons for leaving that do not affect the chronology or an entire account history. Keep an untouched private copy of every source file and share only the application version prepared for this purpose.
Practical example
Example: the first new payslip covers only one week
Luca finishes one role on 9 August and starts the next on 12 August. The signed agreement confirms the start and terms, while the first payslip covers only 12 to 16 August. Luca labels that payslip as a partial first period and keeps the final old-role payslip in a separate historical section. No amount is projected beyond the records.

Questions
Common questions
Clear answers for the decisions people usually pause on.
Should I include documents from my previous job?
Include a previous-role record only when it helps close the earlier period or explains recent income. Label it as historical so it cannot be mistaken for evidence of the current role.
What if my new job has started but I have no payslip yet?
Use the signed record that confirms the role and start date, state that the first pay record is not yet available, and avoid treating the agreed salary as money already received.
