How this is calculated

The cash needed to move in is the bond or deposit, plus rent paid in advance, plus the moving costs you expect. This calculator adds the figures you enter and shows each part.

Formula

  • Weekly rent = rent × periods per year ÷ 52 (weekly rent is used as entered)
  • Bond or deposit = weekly rent × weeks entered, or the exact amount entered
  • Rent in advance = weekly rent × weeks entered
  • Total = bond or deposit + rent in advance + moving + connections + other costs

What it uses

  • The rent on the listing and how often it is quoted
  • The bond or deposit, rent in advance and costs you enter

What it does not tell you

  • Legal limits on bonds, deposits or rent in advance where the property is
  • Holding deposits, application fees or letting fees
  • Whether the costs you enter are what an agent or landlord will ask for

Sources

No external statistics, market data or thresholds are used. Every figure comes from what you enter.

Common questions

What does the move-in cost calculator add up?

It adds the bond or deposit you are asked for, the rent you pay in advance and the moving costs you enter, such as a removalist, connections and anything else you expect to pay before you move in.

Does it tell me how much bond or deposit is allowed?

No. It uses the amount or the number of weeks you enter. Limits depend on where the property is. In Australia, the rental bond calculator shows the maximum bond for each state and territory with its official source.

How is rent in advance worked out from monthly rent?

Monthly rent is multiplied by 12 and divided by 52 to get a weekly figure, then multiplied by the number of weeks you choose. Fortnightly rent is multiplied by 26 before the same division.

Are my figures stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and the figures you type are not sent anywhere. If you allow analytics, we record pseudonymous usage events with the tool, market, an ephemeral attempt ID and standard attribution, without any figure you enter.
