How this is calculated
To split rent by income, divide each person's income by the household's total income and apply that share to the rent. For room shares, apply the percentage each person agrees to. Equal shares divide the rent by the number of people.
Formula
- Equal: rent ÷ number of people
- Room share: rent × agreed share ÷ 100 (shares add up to 100%)
- Income: rent × person's income ÷ total income
- Per month = rent × periods per year ÷ 12, split the same way
What it uses
- The total rent and how often it is quoted
- The number of people and the shares or incomes you enter
What it does not tell you
- Who is legally responsible for the rent under the lease
- Bills, bond or deposit shares between housemates
- Whether a split is fair for your household

Common questions
How can housemates split the rent?
Three common ways are equal shares, shares based on the rooms each person uses, or shares in proportion to each person's income. The calculator shows each method from the figures you enter, so the household can compare them.
How does the income split work?
Each person's share is their monthly take-home income divided by the total of all incomes entered. Someone who earns twice as much pays twice as much rent. Incomes stay in your browser.
Why can a share differ by one cent?
Cents are rounded so that the shares always add back to the rent you entered. Any leftover cent goes to the share that was rounded down the most.
Is the result a legal agreement?
No. It is a calculation to help a household agree. Who is responsible for the rent depends on the lease each person signs. If you allow analytics, we record pseudonymous usage events without any figure you enter.
